We’re in talks to appoint new Black Stars coach – GFA chief

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is in negotiations to appoint a new head coach for the national team, the Black Stars, ahead of their upcoming competitive matches. GFA Executive Council member Gideon Fosu confirmed that discussions are underway to secure a permanent replacement following Carlos Queiroz's contract termination after Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup participation.

Queiroz, a 73-year-old Portuguese coach, joined the Black Stars in April on a short-term contract, replacing Otto Addo, who was dismissed in March. However, attempts to extend Queiroz's stay fell through due to financial disagreements. Fosu assured the public that a new coach would be confirmed ahead of the Black Stars’ next fixtures, which include a match against Senegal and the commencement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The GFA President, Kurt Okraku, will officially announce the coach’s appointment once a decision has been made. Negotiations are currently ongoing, and Fosu assured that the GFA will finalize the appointment at the appropriate time. Carlos Queiroz reportedly earned a monthly salary of $80,000 during his tenure with the Ghanaian national team.

The Black Stars are scheduled to return to competitive action in September when they commence their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. Ghana, who did not qualify for the previous edition of the tournament in Morocco, have been placed in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, and Somalia in their pursuit of a return to Africa’s premier football competition.
