Washington Post ordered to reinstate opinion writer fired over Charlie Kirk posts

An arbitrator has mandated The Washington Post to rehire a Black opinion writer dismissed over social media comments following the death of conservative figure Charlie Kirk. The arbitrator, Sarah Miller Espinosa, determined The Post lacked sufficient justification for terminating Karen Attiah, the newspaper's only Black female opinion writer at the time.

Espinosa also ordered The Post to pay Attiah her full back pay and lost benefits. Charlie Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA and made controversial remarks about race and politics, was fatally shot on September 10 during a public event in Utah. In response to his death, Attiah posted on social media that she would not mourn the loss of a white man who promoted violence, and that the rush to support him was self-protective.

After Kirk's death, Attiah was immediately fired on September 11, accused of "gross misconduct." The arbitrator found The Post had not proven Attiah engaged in misconduct, and that the company had no valid reason to terminate her, violating the collective bargaining agreement. The Democracy Defenders Fund, representing Attiah, described the ruling as a significant victory for press freedom, emphasizing that corporate media cannot use retaliatory measures to silence journalists who reveal uncomfortable truths.
