USS Lincoln sailor's dad arrested by ICE, family says
U.S. Navy sailor Joshua Aviles, who is aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, says he learned his father was arrested by federal immigration officials. Camilo Montoya-Galvez reports.
A U.S. Navy sailor aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln has reportedly informed his family that his father was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials on Saturday. The father, Luis Manuel Aviles, 48, was taken into custody while leaving his home to take his car to a mechanic in Key West, Florida, according to his wife, Argelia Aviles.
Aviles has lived in the U.S. for 19 years and works as a handyman. He entered the country with a valid work permit and has been trying to obtain a green card. His son, Joshua Aviles, 27, who is currently deployed on the USS Abraham Lincoln, confirmed the arrest through a Facebook post. Joshua expressed his distress at the news, stating that his father has done everything legally to secure his citizenship for his siblings and Joshua.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Aviles' arrest, stating that he was apprehended after a vehicle stop in Key West. They emphasized that the arrest has nothing to do with his military service and that the laws passed by Congress are being enforced.
