US urges new UN sanctions to spur rivals in Sudan to negotiate an end to war

United Nations officials have called for the expansion of sanctions against the warring parties in Sudan in hopes of ending the conflict. The United States has urged the U.N. Security Council to take action, citing the ongoing killings, displacement, and famine caused by the fighting. Senior adviser Massad Boulos stated that financial, military, and political support given to either side contributes to the ongoing war.

Egypt and the UAE are seen as key supporters of the government forces and the Rapid Support Forces, respectively, though the UAE denies this. The U.N.-backed human rights investigators previously recommended an arms embargo covering the entire country. The U.S. draft resolution aims to expand that embargo to all parties operating within Sudan and to prohibit drone usage.

The resolution demands an end to all direct and indirect support to the warring parties, including logistical, financial, and military aid. Despite multiple diplomatic efforts, the conflict continues, with both sides remaining focused on military victories.
