US, Egypt discuss port infrastructure, maritime innovation

The US and Egyptian officials gathered in New Cairo on August 23, 2026, to inaugurate the US-Egypt Ports Infrastructure and Maritime Innovation Forum. The purpose of this event was to explore advancements in port development, maritime technology, artificial intelligence, and investment prospects.

Charged d’Affaires Robert Silverman and Deputy Secretary of Commerce Mark Mitchell presided over the forum, while Egypt's Transport Minister Kamel el Wazir delivered opening remarks. American companies showcased state-of-the-art technologies that could bolster Egypt's port infrastructure and artificial intelligence capabilities, opening new avenues for trade and investment between the two nations.

Silverman affirmed the United States' backing for Egypt's endeavors to establish world-class maritime infrastructure. He further stated that American companies are well-equipped to vie for new projects and strengthen bilateral commercial relationships.

Mitchell highlighted Egypt's pivotal role in global trade and technology. He emphasized that US-Egypt collaboration could aid in the modernization of maritime transport, the enhancement of the Suez Canal corridor, and the incorporation of advanced artificial intelligence and data infrastructure technologies from the United States.

The forum served as a platform to connect American firms with opportunities in Egypt's maritime, logistics, data, and cloud computing sectors. Notable Egyptian attendees comprised Suez Canal Economic Zone Chairman Mostafa Sheikhon, North Sinai Governor Khaled Megawer, and Deputy Transport Minister for Maritime Transport Nihad Shahin.

The United States aims to broaden bilateral trade and private-sector investments through cooperation with Egypt in the realms of maritime infrastructure and technology.
