UK's PM Burnham to visit Ukraine with plan to support long-range missile production

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham will journey to Ukraine on Monday, marking his inaugural overseas tour since assuming office. The primary objective of his visit is to unveil British backing aimed at bolstering Kyiv's domestic production of long-range missiles. During his stay, Burnham will preside over a crucial meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, a coalition of nations supporting Ukraine. He is also slated to hold a tête-à-tête with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Burnham's visit to Ukraine is set to announce Britain's agreement to permit European missile manufacturer MBDA to disclose classified information pertaining to British-made components utilized in the SCALP long-range cruise missile. This move is anticipated to facilitate France and Ukraine in establishing local assembly lines for the missile, which incorporates British and French technology.

Burnham articulated, "Ukraine's security is our security," emphasizing Britain's unwavering commitment to Ukraine's well-being. He further reiterated that Britain would remain steadfast in its support for Ukraine "for as long as it takes."

Since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Britain has been one of Ukraine's staunchest supporters, providing military assistance, economic aid, and diplomatic backing. Britain was the first nation to announce plans to furnish Ukraine with Western-made battle tanks and long-range cruise missiles following the invasion and has pledged over £25 billion in military and civilian aid thus far.

Last week, Russia cautioned London about potential repercussions for supplying drones to Kyiv, alleging that Britain's involvement in the war had been deepened by a report suggesting that British-made drones had been employed for long-range strikes against Russia for the first time. Burnham's visit aims to reassure Ukraine and its allies that Britain will continue to assume a pivotal role in fortifying Ukraine's security under his stewardship.

The push to augment Ukraine's domestic missile production emerges as Ukraine becomes increasingly reliant on long-range drones and strike weapons to target Russian oil refineries and logistics facilities situated far behind the front lines. The visit to Ukraine follows Zelensky's trip to Britain in late July, coinciding with Burnham's appointment as prime minister a week earlier.
