UK moves ahead with first £10bil wave of low-rent housing plan

The UK government has announced a £10 billion funding wave to construct affordable rental homes, specifically targeting London, one of the most affected areas by the housing shortage. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who recently moved into Downing Street, has pledged to build more social rent homes, offering tenants a discount of around 50% compared to market rates. This initiative aims to alleviate the long-term welfare bill, reduce homelessness, and provide security to individuals with lower incomes.

Burnham stated that councils are capable of tackling the housing crisis once before and will do so again if properly supported and trusted. He noted that over the 10-year funding plan, more than £16 billion will be allocated outside London. While the exact number of homes to be built with the first wave of financing remains undetermined due to the yet-to-be-split allocation within the capital, approximately 20,000 new homes in northern English cities are expected to be financed in the initial stage.

The government emphasized that this housing-building program aligns with another policy priority of Burnham: devolution. By granting mayoral authorities the power to set strategic direction in their respective areas, the program seeks to empower local governments to drive forward the housing agenda.
