UK economy hands Burnham surprise boost before first budget

Britain is displaying unexpected strength among businesses and consumers, offering a promising sign for newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham before his first budget in October. Despite the country's vulnerability to high inflation due to the Iran war, recent data indicates a potential economic uplift for Burnham and Finance Minister John Healey.

A business survey revealed the services sector, the backbone of the economy, experienced its best growth in six months, defying expectations of a slowdown. Additionally, consumer confidence hit a two-year high in August, reflecting a more positive outlook for households. While economists anticipate significant challenges ahead, including strained public finances and potential increases in borrowing costs, the recent data showcases a glimmer of economic resilience.

Britain's economy grew by 0.3% in June and 0.4% over the second quarter, leading the Group of Seven advanced economies for the first half of the year. This growth can be attributed to strong investment in technology equipment and sectors associated with the AI boom. The services sector's PMI surged to a six-month high of 52.8, indicating a strong recovery. Furthermore, manufacturing order books reached their highest level since November 2024, driven by robust export orders.

Consumers' confidence also improved, with the consumer confidence index rising to -14 in August, up from -17 in July, and purchase sentiment reaching its highest since December 2021. Despite a 0.9% drop in retail sales volumes excluding automotive fuels in July, overall growth remained robust, with three-month retail sales being 4% higher than a year prior.

However, inflation and public finances remain key concerns for Healey as he prepares his budget. Inflation is expected to surpass the 3% threshold in the coming months, and the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war in Iran may further elevate global energy prices.
