UCLA Lands Sun Belt DPOY Through Transfer Portal

UCLA secured the services of former James Madison linebacker Trent Hendrick by acquiring him through the transfer portal, according to a report from On3.com. Hendrick, who was undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, had participated in rookie mini camps with the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs but ultimately decided to return to college football for his fifth season.

Hendrick is among 16 football players granted a temporary restraining order by a Louisiana judge, allowing them to enter the transfer portal. It remains unclear whether this restraining order will face any challenges. As a senior at James Madison last season, Hendrick was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year after tallying 106 tackles, including seven tackles for a loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles.

Hendrick's move to UCLA adds to a growing list of former James Madison coaches and players joining the Bruins this season. New head coach Bob Chesney, who previously coached Hendrick at James Madison, has brought along several former Dukes, including defensive coordinator Colin Hitschler, offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy, and several more.

These additions bring UCLA's total of former James Madison players to 11 this season. Last season, James Madison made their first College Football Playoff appearance in program history. The goal for UCLA in the upcoming season is to achieve their first College Football Playoff appearance.
