Two-year-old becomes seizure-free after advanced epilepsy surgery at Hyderabad hospital

A two-year-old girl from Bhongir, India, who had been battling severe seizures nearly every day since she was six months old, has experienced a miracle recovery following advanced epilepsy surgery at Yashoda Hospitals in Secunderabad. Despite multiple anti-seizure medications failing to control her condition for nearly a year, the girl's life took a dramatic turn when she underwent a pre-surgical evaluation on July 26 at the hospital.

Brain imaging revealed a small lesion in the left temporal region, near critical areas of the brain like the amygdala and hippocampus. This abnormal tissue was identified as the source of her seizures. Neurologist N. Varsha Monica Reddy emphasized the importance of controlling seizures early in life due to the developing brain's high neuroplasticity.

The child then underwent an anterior temporal lobectomy, where the problematic lesion was removed by senior neurosurgeon R.Ayyadurai. A post-operative EEG confirmed that the abnormal brain activity seen before surgery was no longer present. The girl made an impressive recovery, experiencing no further seizures and was discharged within a week of the surgery.
