Trump threatens 50% tariffs on all cars and trucks from Canada

President Donald Trump warned on Monday that US tariffs on all vehicles and automotive components from Canada would rise to 50% from January 1 following the collapse of trade negotiations over the weekend. The proposed deal would have reduced the tariff on Canadian vehicles from 25% to 15% and steel and aluminum tariffs from 50% to 25%, but disagreements remained about whether the tariff relief would cover medium or heavy-duty trucks.

Trump asserted that "Build in the US and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada will be treated like a State no longer!" He added, "On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!" Canada has been a significant trading partner for the US, with US goods and services exchange totaling $872.3 billion last year, a 4.6% decrease.

Over three-quarters of Canadian exports went to the US, while almost half of Canadian imports came from the US. American automotive production is closely linked with Canada and Mexico, and the tariffs could have severe consequences, potentially halting US auto assembly if Canadian parts are targeted. Canada has responded by imposing tariffs on US goods starting September 8 in retaliation for Trump's $20 billion tariffs on Canadian products.
