Trump moves toward levying new tariff on China for flooding market with cheap goods, AP sources say

President Donald Trump is considering imposing a new tariff on China, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The tariff would target China for flooding the global market with underpriced goods. The proposed tariff rate is reported to be 7.5%, stated three people speaking on condition of anonymity. The new tariff would come in addition to existing tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on 60 global economies accused of not effectively enforcing a ban on goods produced via forced labor.

The tariff deliberations follow a Supreme Court decision disallowing Trump's previous plan for implementing a high-tariff scheme similar to one from the 1930s. The proposed tariff is seen as a calculated move by the White House to navigate around this Supreme Court ruling and a planned White House meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which is scheduled for late September.
