Trump contacts Field Marshal Asim Munir before Iran visit

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will impose a 50% tariff on Canadian automobiles, car parts, and steel starting January 1, 2027. This decision follows the failure of trade talks between the two nations and escalates the dispute that began after trade discussions collapsed last week. Trump tweeted in all-caps, stating that Canada should be treated like a U.S. state and that the US does not need Canada, as Canada needs the US.

Trump criticized Canada, calling it among the worst nations to deal with, accusing them of feeling entitled. The current US tariff on Canadian automobiles stands at 25%. The two countries have been blaming each other for failing to reach a trade deal and the recent US tariffs of 50% on various Canadian products, including hockey sticks, fishing rods, wine, and dairy products, went into effect on Saturday. These tariffs affect $20 billion worth of goods, representing about 5% of Canada's annual shipments to the US.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his country will retaliate with tariffs starting September 8, covering steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Canada accounts for roughly 70% of US exports, making it more vulnerable in the ongoing standoff. No further negotiations are currently scheduled.

Carney accused the US of using economic integration as a weapon and claimed that Canada had been attacked by the new American tariffs, stating that Canada offered too little and asked too much.

US Trade Representative Jamie Pressly stated that the US had to act after a year of retaliation from Canada. The US is focused on protecting American workers and supply chains. As of now, Canada has not commented on the additional tariffs announced by Trump.
