The Traffic and Road Safety Management wing of Kerala Police has released guidelines to help road users maintain efficient lane traffic, aiming to prevent traffic congestion and accidents. Police have noticed an increasing number of two-wheeler riders keeping to the right side of the road, often hugging the median, believing it is safer.

This behavior is a violation of traffic rules and due to a lack of awareness, leading to accidents. The lane traffic system involves arranging vehicles in separate lanes to ensure smooth traffic flow, reducing congestion and preventing accidents.

To comply with the guidelines, slow-moving and heavy vehicles should always use the left-most lane. Vehicles traveling at normal speed can use the middle lanes, while the far right lane is meant solely for overtaking other vehicles. After overtaking, vehicles should return to their previous lane. Proper usage of indicators is crucial before changing lanes, and drivers should constantly watch rear-view and side mirrors for approaching vehicles.

Lane changes are permitted in stretches marked with broken white lines but are not allowed where the lines are unbroken. Overtaking in stretches marked with yellow lines should be avoided, and lane changes at junctions and zebra crossings are prohibited.

Kerala police will conduct strict checks to ensure lane traffic discipline is followed by vehicle users, aiming to avoid accidents. The public can report traffic violations, including photos, audio, or video, along with details such as the district, location, date, time, and vehicle number, through the Shubhayatra WhatsApp number (974700 1099). Reporters must adhere to English language and full sentence requirements, avoiding abusive or personal content.
