Top diplomats of S. Korea, U.S. stress 'close' communication on N. Korea's nuclear issue

Seoul/Washington, Aug. 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday that they will maintain close communication and cooperation to tackle North Korea's nuclear issue and enhance peace on the Korean Peninsula, according to Seoul's foreign ministry. The duo engaged in a phone conversation on Monday, amid President Donald Trump's recent ambiguity regarding his intentions to engage with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, which has raised apprehensions about the U.S. potentially recognizing North Korea as a nuclear power.

The two ministers emphasized their mutual commitment to bolstering peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and resolving the nuclear conundrum while preserving a robust joint defense strategy. Cho further expressed confidence that Trump's recent call for dialogue with Kim will prompt a revival of talks between Washington and Pyongyang, leading to peace on the peninsula.

This remark likely alludes to Trump's expectation of meeting Kim later in the month, as he previously directed a reduction in South Korea-U.S. military drills, perceived as a goodwill gesture towards Pyongyang.

The ministers also confirmed their continued dedication to elevating bilateral relations by achieving mutually advantageous results on various outstanding matters, such as tariffs, an investment agreement, and security cooperation. Cho underscored South Korea's pledge to contribute significantly to restoring free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting President Trump's proactive role in addressing Middle Eastern issues.

Rubio elaborated on the U.S. endeavors to foster peace and stability in the region, and the two diplomats agreed to hold an in-depth discussion on key issues in the near future.
