'Tipsy' beer glass from Japan brewer aims to encourage responsible drinking

NAGANO -- A prominent Japanese craft beer producer, Yoho Brewing Co., based in Nagano Prefecture's Karuizawa town, has unveiled an innovative beer glass called the "Wobbly Beer Glass" to promote responsible drinking habits. The glass is designed to discourage excessive beer consumption without adequate water intake. Yoho Brewing Co. has previously introduced a "Slow Beer Glass" with a narrow midsection to limit liquid flow and slow down drinking pace.

In December of the previous year, the company began developing the new glass with the objective of encouraging users to drink water alongside beer. The Wobbly Beer Glass comprises two interconnected chambers, one for beer and the other for water. The glass becomes unstable and tilts if the ratio of beer to water consumption surpasses a 1-to-2 ratio, prompting users to drink water. Each chamber holds 270 milliliters of liquid.

The glass underwent multiple prototype stages to address challenges like liquid spillage and excessive tipping over when one chamber was emptied. The Wobbly Beer Glass is currently available at around 30 bars and establishments across Japan. One such participating venue is Tada umai sake ga nomitakute, a bar in Nagano's Minamiishidocho district, which means "I just want to drink good sake." This bar has been using the Wobbly Beer Glass since early August.

The bar owner expressed his thoughts on the glass, stating, "Beer does not hydrate you, but many people do not order a chaser of water. It is interesting to get people to drink water by designing the glass in this way." The Wobbly Beer Glass has garnered attention, with some customers becoming interested after observing others using it.

The company is presently seeking 50 restaurants and bars interested in incorporating the new beer glass, with applications accepted through a designated online form (in Japanese) until September 30. Selected glasses will be provided following a selection process. Additionally, the company is offering the product for pre-order via Yona Yona no Sato, the official website for its flagship craft beer brand, Yona Yona Ale, priced at 13,750 yen (approximately $86).
