The women powering GoSolr

South Africa's renewable energy sector often features male-dominated technical roles, yet women are increasingly taking on influential positions. Data from Statistics South Africa reveals that women make up around 37% of the broader energy industry, with men comprising roughly 63% of green employment. To celebrate Women's Month, GoSolr is showcasing the women driving its solar business, illustrating the diverse career paths contributing to South Africa's renewable energy market.

Among the women highlighted are legal counsel Dharmisha Lala-Harmse, head of customer experience and compliance Tanya Jooste, and executive Natalie Thom, who leads strategic initiatives at GoSolr. Lala-Harmse joined the company in March 2025, leveraging her legal experience to tackle contracts, compliance, customer disputes, litigation, and legal risk management. She emphasizes the significance of using her skills to address South Africa's energy challenges.

For Jooste, who initially had little knowledge of solar technology, her role as compliance manager has led her to learn about wiring standards, DB boards, inverters, batteries, and system performance. Her leadership lessons include learning when to step back and trust her team, drawing inspiration from her father's determination.

Thom's journey to GoSolr began six years ago at Xfacta, where she gained insight into the company's growth. After installing a solar system at her home, she became a GoSolr customer before joining the company as a special projects lead and later moving into an executive role. She highlights the company's focus on affordable, reliable energy, offering women entering the sector reassurance and guidance to navigate technical challenges.
