The Google Play Store is working on a new way to find apps using images

Google is developing a new method to locate apps within the Play Store using images, as revealed by the upcoming version 52.8.55-34 of the Play Store's code. This feature, tentatively named "Ask Play," will enable users to attach direct images from their phone's camera or gallery to their queries. These could include screenshots of specific home screen widgets, app features, or even types of apps they are interested in.

The update could even result in the retirement of the existing "Ask Play about this app" section. Instead, Google might implement sticky, horizontally scrollable question chips that represent common queries. This development is part of Google's ongoing efforts to enhance app discovery through a conversational search interface.

At Google I/O 2026, Google introduced an updated version of Ask Play, which leverages natural conversation and follow-up questions to help users find apps and receive concise summaries. The new image attachment feature would further streamline this process, making it even more intuitive for users to get the information they need.
