Tesla, other automakers recall record 4.3 million vehicles in China

Tesla and eight other automakers have announced a record-breaking recall of about 4.3 million vehicles in China due to potentially difficult-to-open emergency door handles. The recall, which starts on September 25, encompasses 2.98 million imported and China-made Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles from Tesla, along with 390,000 from Chinese EV maker Leapmotor, 371,000 from Xiaomi and 264,000 from Xpeng.

The automakers are implementing various remedies, including warning labels, software updates, and improved markings around door handles. Tesla's recall focuses on mechanical emergency door-release handles that may be challenging to locate or operate in a crash, potentially hindering occupants' escape or rescuers' access. In contrast, Xiaomi and Leapmotor will only add warning labels and upgrade power-window control software, while Xpeng will update its vehicle's over-the-air software to automatically lower windows following a collision.

Most of these actions, classified as product recalls under Chinese regulations, aim to address a defect that has come under scrutiny following several cases of passengers being trapped inside burning vehicles.

China has been increasing oversight of the EV industry, introducing stricter safety requirements as automakers introduce new technologies in the world's largest vehicle market. The country has also announced a ban on concealed door handles starting in 2027, making it the first nation to phase out a design popularized by Tesla and widely adopted by domestic Chinese EV makers.
