Terrorists attack Niger community, abduct residents as troops swoop in

Suspected terrorists attacked the Dekara community in Niger State's Borgu Local Government Area, abducting residents and reportedly killing others before security forces arrived. According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, troops were stationed in Dekara on Friday, August 21, as a precautionary measure ahead of a planned clearance operation in Kainji Lake National Park.

The community sits close to the Nigeria-Benin Republic border and near the park's edge. Makama stated that while troops were advancing towards Dekara, the terrorists launched an attack, causing residents to flee. The troops subsequently arrived, establishing a blocking position, but the terrorists then targeted them. The troops repelled the attackers without any casualties on their side.

During the subsequent search of the area, the troops recovered an AK-47 rifle and other items believed to have been abandoned by the terrorists. Makama noted that the precise number of residents abducted or killed remains unrevealed, as some residents reportedly crossed into the Benin Republic before the troops reached the scene.

He reported that preparations are underway for a substantial clearance and search-and-rescue operation in Kainji Lake National Park to find the terrorists and rescue any potential victims. Makama predicted that the operation will involve newly inducted troops and existing forces already in the area.
