‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ tops US box office for fourth straight weekend despite sharp drop in weekend take

<Los Angeles, Aug 24> Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains atop the North American box office for the fourth consecutive weekend, raking in US$39 million (RM157 million), a significant 45 percent drop from the previous weekend's earnings. The Tom Holland and Zendaya-starring superhero film, which made the largest debut weekend in US history, has now amassed US$854.9 million in ticket sales across the United States and Canada since its July 31 release — with another US$1.37 billion collected internationally, according to Exhibitor Relations.

Coming in second place was Insidious: Out of the Further, the sixth horror installment distributed by Sony Pictures. It opened with US$25.3 million, giving the franchise a strong start. The film follows a young woman who can summon spirits into the mortal realm, but is tormented by her own past. Industry analyst David Gross noted in the FranchiseRe movie industry newsletter that while the drop from the previous week's opening is notable, it is typical for these sequel installments.

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey dropped to third place, earning US$19.5 million, a 17 percent decline in its sixth weekend. The epic film has now collected US$539.1 million domestically. Fourth place was claimed by Paramount Pictures' Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, which brought in US$9.1 million, down 55 percent from last weekend.

The Fast and the Furious, directed by Warner Bros., rounded out the top five with US$3.1 million, also experiencing a 57 percent drop. Rounding out the top 10 were Mutiny, Tony, Spa Weekend, and the unique sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor.
