Singapore to strengthen Asean unity, integration under 2027 chairmanship, says Wong

Singapore pledged to bolster Asean cohesion and unity, enhance integration, and amplify its significance as a unified market during its upcoming chairmanship in 2027, asserted Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. Delivering a National Day Rally address in 2026, Wong underscored the nation's intention to fortify partnerships beyond Asean amidst the turbulent global climate triggered by West Asia conflicts.

Wong emphasized that despite external collaboration, Singapore must possess the resilience to navigate challenges independently, cautioning that the West Asia turmoil could escalate dramatically. Wong spotlighted Singapore's crucial role as a global commerce and finance nexus, connecting diverse entities and generating value worldwide.

The prime minister aimed to augment Singapore's relevance and expand opportunities for locals by expanding connections with additional partners. Wong highlighted Singapore's unwavering adherence to the rule of law and robust institutions, vouching that the nation keeps its commitments, especially in an era where trust is scarce.

Wong also announced bolstered support for Singaporean families, including extended childcare leave and a higher income threshold for those purchasing Housing and Development Board flats. Moreover, Wong unveiled ambitious infrastructural projects, such as consolidating islands like Semakau, Bukom, and Pulau Sudong for industrial and power purposes, and exploring the feasibility of constructing an undersea tunnel from the mainland to Pulau Tekong.
