Scottie Scheffler reveals battle with children’s disease during BMW Championship

Scottie Scheffler, the world's top-ranked golfer, shared the struggles he faced during the recent BMW Championship due to a health issue that caused him considerable pain. The 30-year-old golfer entered the tournament at St. Louis, Missouri, as the leader in the FedExCup standings, following his victory at the St. Jude Championship.

However, he later revealed that he had been battling hand, foot, and mouth disease throughout the event. Scheffler explained that the condition brought about blisters on his hands, mouth, and feet, making it challenging to grip the club and play effectively. Despite his initial discomfort, Scheffler decided to continue playing, believing he could still have a chance by pushing through the first few rounds.

He admitted that his stubbornness was both a strength and a weakness, as he never withdraws from a tournament. As the week progressed, Scheffler's throat remained sore, but he felt proud of his performance despite the adversity. He scored 65 and 68 in the second and third rounds and finished the final round tied for 12th place with a score of 2-under 68.

This victory added $426,250 to his already impressive career earnings, bringing him closer to Tiger Woods' all-time earnings record on the PGA Tour. Scheffler's determination to compete despite his illness showcases his competitive spirit, but he acknowledged that he should have considered his well-being more carefully, especially with his postseason still ongoing.

He now looks forward to resting and recovering before participating in the Tour Championship at the end of the FedExCup Playoffs, scheduled to begin on August 27 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
