Ricky Martin has been confirmed as both a cast member and executive producer for Gael García Bernal's upcoming film Hombre al Agua. The news came as a surprise, as the singer's involvement had not been widely reported until now. According to Deadline, Martin joined the production just before filming commenced in Mérida, Mexico, and managed to complete his scenes in a single day.
His character, Roby, is an actor hired to portray the film's protagonist in a movie-within-the-movie. This marks Martin's first fully Spanish-language role in over two decades. Gael García Bernal revealed that Martin was the first actor he had in mind for the role, despite initially considering it a "near-impossible idea." The film will premiere at the Venice Film Festival and then screen at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening in Mexican theaters on September 24th.
