RBL Cup providing more competitive games for academy players

RBL Leipzig aims to boost the development of young talents by providing more competitive games for their academy players. Head of Youth Development David Wagner explained that the club currently plays too few high-level matches, particularly for older academy sides. To address this, they introduced the RBL Cup, which will see RB Leipzig host an international U21 tournament alongside other clubs.

This new tournament, in combination with other leagues, will offer over 45 competitive games for U19s next season, a significant increase from last term. Wagner emphasized that more competitive games are crucial for player development, as the additional matches provide players with more opportunities to perform at the highest level, especially during the transition from youth to professional football.

The RBL Cup will feature top academy sides like Atlético Madrid, FC Porto, Mainz 05, and Liverpool FC, offering players valuable exposure to higher-intensity games and players from abroad. RB Leipzig will select players from their U19s for the matches, with the possibility of including select U17 players. Each team will play four games, leading to a Final Four at Cottaweg around Easter 2027.

Additionally, the tournament will bring convenience to players who previously had to travel to England for other competitions. New head coach Mark Heidenmann and assistant Daniel Zolotarev have strengthened the RBL U19s with promising players from Germany and abroad, with their first match set for August 1st against Kaiserslautern U19s.
