QpiAI to install 8-qubit quantum computer at PDEU in Gujarat

Bengaluru-based QpiAI will install an 8-qubit quantum computer at Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU) in Gujarat, as part of a new memorandum of understanding. The Quantum Centre of Excellence will be established alongside the installation, bolstering education, research, and workforce development in quantum technology. QpiAI's QVidya system, along with software, application libraries, and an interface with PDEU's computing systems, will be available for university use and cloud-based access by external users.

QpiAI founder and CEO Dr Nagendra Nagaraja highlighted Gujarat's industrial profile, stating that the region requires upskilling in quantum computing and information science. PDEU, initially a petroleum university, has expanded its research to energy and technology areas since 2007. Quantum computing, though still emerging, holds potential in materials, chemistry, optimization, and energy-related problems.

PDEU Director General Prof Sundar S Manoharan emphasized the center's role in addressing the long-term capability gap in quantum computing. The new facility aligns with India's substantial investment in quantum technologies through the National Quantum Mission, which aims to develop capabilities in computing, communications, sensing, materials, and devices.

Industry players like IBM, Tata Consultancy Services, and the Andhra Pradesh government are also advancing quantum initiatives, with IBM planning an IBM Quantum System Two with a 156-qubit processor at a tech park in Amaravati.
