PSG coach says players must defend rapid attacks better after two games without a win

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique called on his players to improve their attentiveness during rapid attacks following two consecutive losses. After failing to secure a win in the past two matches, PSG managed a 2-2 draw against Rennes in their most recent game, thanks to two late goals scored by substitute Ferran Torres. This result came after a 1-0 defeat to Lens in the Trophée des Champions, the French Super Cup.

Coach Enrique emphasized the importance of player positioning, stating, “There are certain positions where you need to be sure your position is covered by another player. If you’re a little bit distracted, you can have problems.” The Rennes goals were scored through quick breaks, exacerbating PSG’s defensive issues. With many players absent due to the World Cup, PSG’s preseason training was limited, and the squad appeared fatigued during the Rennes match.

Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, who performed well for France at the World Cup, was substituted at halftime. The first Rennes goal exposed PSG’s defensive lapses, as Sebastian Szymanski was left exposed on the edge of the penalty area following a quick break down the left flank. The second goal came from Esteban Lepaul, who capitalized on a rapid break down the right flank, leaving PSG players out of position.

Despite the loss, Rennes almost scored a decisive goal with minutes remaining, thanks to another swift counterattack on the left flank. Coach Enrique acknowledged that the counterattacks were not the sole issue, noting, “They were very dangerous and difficult to handle.” PSG had planned to play at home but switched venues due to damage to their pitch caused by a severe heatwave in Paris. The defending champions will face Lille away on Friday.
