Pro-Palestinian protesters jailed over 2024 Golden Gate Bridge blockade

A group of seven individuals faced legal consequences for their role in blocking traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge during a 2024 pro-Palestinian demonstration. According to prosecutors, these activists were convicted of misdemeanor offenses, including false imprisonment, obstruction of thoroughfare, and unlawful assembly. However, they did not reach a verdict on the more serious charge of felony conspiracy.

The demonstrators maintained that their actions were justified out of moral duty to oppose the Israeli assault on Gaza and the United States' backing of its ally. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins stated that while they acknowledged the protesters' intent, the blockade posed a safety risk for commuters and warranted accountability.

The sentences, handed down by Superior Court Judge Teresa Caffese, included 30 days in county jail, with four days already served, six months of probation, and fines exceeding $1,000. The defendants will be eligible for work release through the San Francisco Sheriff's Office. The jury's decision to not convict on the conspiracy charge means the defendants will not face up to 15 years in prison.

Prosecutors have indicated that they will not retry the case. This incident underscores the ongoing tension between civil disobedience and the law, as well as the consequences that activists may face for their actions.
