Politician Rose Mbithe, alongside daughter and son to face murder charges of psychiatrist Dr Mutiso

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has announced charges against three individuals for the murder of psychiatrist Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso. Dr. Mutiso, a former Director of the African Institute of Mental and Brain Health, was fatally shot in Nairobi on July 29, 2026. The suspects include politician Rose Mbithe, her children, and advocates Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa.

The DPP, led by Jalson Makori, stated that the charges followed the conclusion of preliminary investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Dr. Mutiso was reportedly involved in a pending land dispute in Machakos when she was confronted by two armed individuals in a motorcycle, who threatened her with a firearm.

She managed to escape and reported the incident to the Kilimani Police Station. The DPP's decision to charge the suspects stems from evidence linking them to the alleged offense. The murder is believed to have been carried out with military precision, but investigators responded with a robust operation involving forensic science, intelligence gathering, digital evidence, and inter-agency collaboration.

The DCI identified Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, Officer-in-Charge of Nderi Police Post in Kikuyu, as the alleged link between financiers and the operational team. Sang is currently on the run. Police Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi, attached to Karinde Police Post, has been arrested as the alleged shooter. Another officer, constable Bett Kiplangat Collins of Thogoto Police Post, is being sought.

The DCI also revealed that some of the suspects may be connected to the September 9, 2025, drive-by shooting of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, which remains under investigation. Police vowed to pursue all suspects regardless of rank or position, emphasizing the gravity of the alleged involvement of police officers in the murder plot.
