Police honour 10 officers who died during gun battle with bandits in Kebbi

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, announced on Monday that the families of the 10 police officers who died in a violent confrontation with bandits in Kebbi State will never be forgotten. The officers, part of the Special Intervention Squad, were killed on August 10, 2026, while patrolling the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area.

The officers engaged a heavily armed group of suspected bandits moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states and, in the ensuing battle, lost their lives, while two others were injured. Two civilians also perished during the incident.

Disu emphasized that the officers' sacrifice was not in vain, as they successfully neutralised 17 suspected bandits and destroyed four of their motorcycles. He expressed deep condolences to the families of the fallen officers, assuring them that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to supporting them and ensuring their sacrifice is not forgotten. Disu urged Nigerians to remember the officers and the numerous police personnel who continue to risk their lives for the safety of the nation.

CP Abayomi Shogunle, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Special Intervention Squad, called on the IGP to ensure that the families of the fallen officers are well cared for, as this would serve as motivation for the remaining officers. He praised the officers for their courage and dedication, noting that their stand against the bandits, despite the heavy losses, is a testament to their commitment to serving and protecting the people.

Shogunle emphasized that the SIS, the unit the fallen officers belonged to, has achieved unmatched feats in the police force and urged the IGP to maintain the spirit of these officers.
