Outrage in Nepal over rape and murder of 3-year-old girl

Activists and politicians in Nepal are demanding tougher laws following the alleged rape and murder of a three-year-old girl, which has sparked outrage across the nation. The incident occurred in Madhesh province, where the girl was found dead last week, three days after she went missing. Nine people have been arrested in connection with the case, according to a local police spokesman. The tragedy has led to widespread protests and calls for reform.

Police have faced criticism for alleged negligence during the initial investigation, particularly after footage of a teenage suspect was leaked on social media. Following days of demonstrations in Simara, the victim's family met with government ministers and secured a written agreement. The government has pledged to review laws on serious offenses and establish a memorial for the child.

The incident has also sparked a broader debate about how Nepal handles young offenders, with some campaigners advocating for harsher punishments for minors convicted of rape or murder. Prominent human rights activist Gauri Pradhan condemned the attack, stating that the government should punish those involved in such an atrocious act, while cautioning against calls for the death penalty.

Police have identified one individual directly involved in leaking the suspect's statement to social media and have initiated action against him, with plans to punish additional officers if found. Since July 2017, over 25,500 accusations of rape and sexual abuse have been filed in Nepal, with more than 3,200 female victims under the age of 10.
