Operation Safed Sagar: Why creators chose not to make Ajay Ahuja ‘larger than life’

The critically acclaimed Netflix drama Operation Safed Sagar has garnered praise for its portrayal of the Indian Air Force's role in the 1999 Kargil War and its focus on real-life war heroes, with Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja's character being a standout. Created by Abhijeet Singh Parmar, the show chose to portray Ajay Ahuja as an ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances rather than a larger-than-life hero.

Parmar explained that this approach made Ajay's story more interesting and relatable. Before working on Operation Safed Sagar, Parmar had experience with other TVF shows like Gullak and Panchayat, which taught him that a character doesn't have to be extraordinary to have an extraordinary story. To bring authenticity to Ajay Ahuja's portrayal, Parmar consulted his real-life wife, Alka Ahuja, learning about his personal life, habits, worries, and relationships.

This allowed the creators to portray Ajay as a husband, father, friend, and mentor, rather than just a war hero. The show avoided foreshadowing Ajay's death, aiming to create genuine emotional moments without feeling sentimental. Instead of focusing on grand romantic gestures, the creators emphasized the small details of their relationship to make it feel authentic.

They wanted the audience to mourn a person, not just a war hero, and to see their relationship as a real marriage rather than a cinematic love story.
