One in 322 billion - club golfer defies birdie odds

An English amateur golfer, Allan Harrison, defied astronomical odds to achieve an extraordinary feat on the golf course. On September 8, 2026, Harrison took to the nine-hole course at Fairhaven Golf Club, starting with four dropped shots on the front nine. However, a pasty and drink at the halfway house seemed to revive his spirits.

Harrison then proceeded to carve out an impressive run, hitting seven consecutive birdies and eight birdies in just nine holes. This remarkable achievement, rarely seen even at the professional golf level, was calculated by England Golf to have odds of one in 322 billion for any amateur golfer to accomplish. With a handicap of 0.4, Harrison's chances were estimated to be one in 455,000.

The average birdie count for the PGA Tour leader is around 4.8-5.0 per 18 holes, translating to roughly 2.5 birdies per nine holes. Harrison's round began with a challenging front nine, where he found himself at four-over par. But with renewed determination, he managed to turn the tide on the back nine, making eight birdies in a row.

Had he managed to shoot nine consecutive birdies, Harrison would have matched the record set by American golfers Mark Calcavecchia in 2009 and Kevin Chappell in 2019. Despite narrowly missing out on a place in golf history, Harrison finished second overall in the Silver Pheasant tournament, leading with 40 points after the first round.

The feat of achieving eight birdies in nine holes is not unique to Harrison, as another Australian amateur golfer, Amelia Harris, also accomplished this feat just a month prior during the US Girls Junior tournament in Durham, North Carolina.
