Nvidia worker among 9 charged in Taiwan chip smuggling case

Taipei — In a recent legal case, nine individuals in Taiwan, including an Nvidia employee, have been charged with the illegal export of artificial intelligence servers to China, according to Taiwanese prosecutors. The indictments stem from an investigation into the shipment of 74 high-performance AI servers, fabricated by Super Micro Computer and incorporating advanced Nvidia chips, into China in violation of U.S. export restrictions.

Eight of the nine accused have been charged with breach of trust and forging documents to facilitate the smuggling of these servers. The servers, 50 of which passed through Indonesia, eight through Japan, and the remaining directly to China, were seized at various points. Additionally, 56 servers were intercepted at Taiwan's border.

Three of the defendants face embezzlement charges. The U.S. imposes limitations on exports to China of advanced silicon chips essential for powering artificial intelligence systems, developed by industry giant Nvidia. However, such actions are not considered criminal offenses in Taiwan, a point raised by lawmakers and experts.
