NSIB flags building blocking Benin airport tower view

The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has raised concerns over an uncompleted building obstructing the control tower's view at the Benin Airport, following a runway overrun incident involving an Enugu Air aircraft in July. This finding is detailed in the NSIB's preliminary report, which highlights the obstruction as one of the safety issues demanding immediate attention.

The uncompleted structure reportedly blocks the controller's sight towards the end of Runway 05, particularly the threshold of Runway 23. The July incident, which saw Enugu Air experience a serious accident months after obtaining its Air Operator Certificate, involved a takeoff, climb, cruise, and descent that were all normal. However, the aircraft, an Embraer ERJ 170-100LR with registration 5N-ENR, had an inoperative autobrake system, leading it to land on a wet runway amid deteriorating weather conditions.

The aircraft carrying 68 passengers and five crew members landed on a wet runway, causing it to overrun the runway and strike approach lighting installations and two concrete structures associated with a decommissioned localizer installation. Despite the crew's awareness of the wet runway, they continued their approach to Runway 05, eventually landing safely.

The NSIB has recommended four immediate actions to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, aiming to improve safety measures at the airport.
