NRRM Condemns Modu Sheriff’s Appointment to Tinubu Campaign Council

The Nigeria Rescue & Renewal Movement (NRRM) has publicly criticized the inclusion of former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, on the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for the upcoming 2027 election. This decision came after the release of the council's list, with Sheriff appointed as the Zonal Campaign Coordinator for the North-East region.

The APC's campaign leadership is headed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while Senator Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State serves as the Director-General. NRRM spokesperson, Comrade Aliyu Adam Usman, expressed the organization's concern over the decision, citing historical allegations that have linked Sheriff to Boko Haram in the past.

These allegations, which have been publicly made and denied by Sheriff, date back several years. In 2014, he was accused of having ties to the insurgency, a claim he has consistently refuted, stating that the allegations were baseless. NRRM emphasized that their objection is not about Sheriff's potential criminal conviction or the establishment of these historical allegations as facts, but rather about the need for greater scrutiny and accountability in political appointments, especially when individuals with controversial histories are entrusted with significant responsibilities in regions plagued by insecurity.

The group argued that political parties must consider not only electoral considerations but also public confidence, historical controversies, and the broader welfare of communities when appointing campaign leaders. They stressed that the North-East, which has endured years of insurgency and insecurity, requires political leadership capable of rebuilding trust and addressing the long-term impacts of conflict.

The NRRM urged Nigerians to demand transparency and accountability from all political parties and their candidates as the 2027 election approaches. They reiterated that the historical allegations against Sheriff, which he has repeatedly denied, should not be treated as established facts or evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
