Nordic football federations withdraw confidence in FIFA chief Infantino

Six Nordic football associations have withdrawn their trust in FIFA President Gianni Infantino, calling for a thorough examination of FIFA's governance structure. Six national football federations from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands have released a joint statement expressing grave concerns over FIFA's current governance and decision-making processes.

The federations emphasized their shared commitment with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and backed the recommendations put forth by UEFA to tackle the existing issues. They also echoed the appeals from the Asian Football Confederation, CONCACAF, and UEFA for an impartial external investigation into the FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative.

The statement urged FIFA to undertake a comprehensive and unbiased review of its governance framework, focusing on ensuring principles of independence, checks and balances, transparency, and accountability. These principles were meant to be reinforced through the implementation of the 2016 reform program. Infantino is currently under intense pressure to step down following his decision to auction World Cup commercial rights to private investors, which has drawn sharp criticism from various continental football federations.
