Nawuni River swells as NADMO warns of rising flood risk in Northern Region

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued a flood warning for the Nawuni area in the Kumbungu District of Ghana's Northern Region. Rising water levels at the Nawuni intake have reached 23.85 feet, falling within the critical range of 20 to 30 feet that could lead to flooding. NADMO officials caution that this could result in the White Volta overflowing and inundating nearby communities and farmlands, especially if more rain falls in the area.

Chief Disaster Control Officer Iddrisu Abubakari Ziblim informed JoyNews that NADMO is closely watching the situation, including rainfall patterns, ahead of any potential water spillage from upstream Burkina Faso. He stated that the organization would be notified by SONABEL, Burkina Faso’s national electricity company, if they begin spilling water from the Bagre Dam. Should this happen, NADMO anticipates the floodwaters to reach the Northern Region within seven days.

NADMO has been conducting pre-flood monitoring and public awareness since August 4, when they received an initial alert from SONABEL through the Water Resources Commission. As a precaution, NADMO has deployed a Rapid Response Team to Walewale in the North East Region to assist with emergency response and evacuation if necessary. They urge residents to stay vigilant and follow official instructions as monitoring of the water levels continues.
