Musawa mourns Ogogo, hails his contribution to Yoruba cinema

Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, paid tribute to late Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, widely known as 'Ogogo', on Monday following his death on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the age of 66. Ogogo was a celebrated figure in Yoruba cinema, having battled stage-four cancer in the weeks preceding his demise.

His health had reportedly worsened, leading his family to seek medical assistance for further treatment. Born in Ilaro, Ogun State, Ogogo was a versatile artist in Nollywood, contributing as an actor, filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter for several decades. He was recognized for his commanding screen presence and roles that authentically represented Yoruba culture and storytelling.

Musawa described Ogogo as a towering figure in the Nigerian film industry and a custodian of Nigeria's culture and Yoruba storytelling. She acknowledged his significant contributions to the Nigerian creative industry, saying that he brought Yoruba culture and cinema to millions across Nigeria and beyond. Her statement also expressed condolences to Ogogo's family, colleagues, fans, and the people of Ogun State.
