Muli’s political gamble to redraw Ukambani’s power map

As the 2027 political contest heats up, a new question is emerging in Ukambani: can Augustus Kyalo Muli establish the kind of regional insurgency seen through the careers of Edwin Sifuna and Ndindi Nyoro? The parallels between the three are striking. With a party membership of over 200,000 in Ukambani alone, Muli's National Liberal Party (NLP) is gaining traction.

On August 13, Muli addressed a massive crowd of over 6,000 at Kitui Stadium, a clear indication of his growing influence. Unlike Sifuna and Nyoro, Muli hasn't yet taken a side in the national political arena. He positions himself as "Ukambani's insurance policy," advocating for the region to negotiate nationally from a collective strength instead of relying on a particular coalition or presidential candidate.

This strategy mirrors Sifuna and Nyoro's approaches but with a crucial difference. Muli aims to establish his political identity before aligning himself with either side. His success will depend on whether he can translate his organizational claims into sustained mass mobilization, particularly during the upcoming Anzauni Cultural Festival and coronation in Kitui.

Despite not having the same institutional backing as Sifuna or Nyoro, Muli's clan-based machinery gives him an edge in a region where clan networks dominate politics. With the opposition landscape fragmented and regional politicians having considerable room to maneuver, Muli's NLP could become a significant player in the national political arena.
