MTN Ghana pledges ¢20m support package for Ghanaians returning from South Africa

MTN Ghana has announced a GH¢20 million support package for Ghanaians returning from South Africa amid renewed xenophobic attacks, according to the company's Board Chairman, Dr Ishmael Yamson. The Chairman disclosed this during an interview on Joy News’ PM Express. Initially, MTN Ghana had planned to spend GH¢10 million to welcome the returnees, but later decided on a longer-term intervention to have a greater impact.

Dr Yamson explained that they reconsidered their approach after realizing that providing immediate relief alone would not be sufficient. He elaborated that many returning individuals were only allowed two suitcases when they returned to Ghana. With this in mind, MTN Ghana decided to establish a fund to assist these individuals in starting their lives anew.

The Chairman admitted that MTN Ghana should have consulted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier regarding this initiative. However, he emphasized that the delay should not be misconstrued as a lack of concern for the affected Ghanaians. He reiterated that the company remains committed to the intervention, stating that they will proceed despite the delay, aiming to make a more significant and lasting impact.

Dr Yamson condemned the xenophobic attacks in South Africa targeting African migrants, including Ghanaians, and dissociated MTN Ghana from the violence. He also acknowledged that the company's response was slower than some other corporate organizations in making their support public. Dr Yamson praised other companies and organizations, such as Telecel, the Pentecost Church, for their support for the returnees.
