More Than One Third of Websites Online Are Now Written by AI

A Pew Research Center analysis reveals that more than one-third of English-language webpages online are likely written or substantially edited by artificial intelligence. Utilizing the Open Pangram AI-detection model, researchers examined approximately 490,000 pages collected by Common Crawl between January 2021 and July 2026. While 10% of all pages showed substantial AI authorship, this figure rose to over a third when considering only webpages published after ChatGPT’s November 2022 launch.

Commercial websites showed a higher propensity for AI writing, with roughly one in ten .com pages displaying AI signals, compared to 4.6% on .org sites and 1% on .edu and .gov domains. As AI has become more prevalent, writing habits such as the increased use of em dashes, Oxford commas, specific words like "delve" and "interplay," and negative parallelism have become more common.

However, Pew cautions that these indicators alone cannot conclusively determine if an article was AI-generated, as humans also employ these patterns, and AI-detection tools may misclassify both human and machine-written content.
