More rape, molestation cases in first half of 2026, even as total number of physical crimes drop

In the first half of 2026, Singapore saw a rise in rape and molestation cases, while the overall number of physical crimes decreased. On a nearly empty bus in June, a 55-year-old man repeatedly touched a young woman's thigh as she sat frozen, an incident Ow Cheow Yam, an assistant operations manager, witnessed and intervened in.

The attacker was arrested by the police. Sexual assaults in Singapore are on the rise, with 762 cases in the first six months of 2026, up from 739 in the same period the previous year. Rape cases also increased to 261 in the first half of 2026 from 230 in 2025. Most of the molestation cases occurred in residential areas, on public transport, and at entertainment venues.

Two individuals were recently honored for their actions in preventing sexual assaults. Vickneswary Krishnan, a security supervisor, saw a woman confronting a drunk man on an escalator who was allegedly touching her thigh. Despite the victim's uncertainty, Vickneswary documented the incident and shared it with police, leading to an arrest. Another commendation went to Ow Cheow Yam, who stopped a man from leaving the bus after witnessing the same kind of assault.

The police emphasized that trust and familiarity between offenders and victims do not lessen the severity of these crimes and that those who exploit such relationships will face stern penalties. Other violent crimes, such as knife-related incidents and murders, remained relatively stable. Housebreaking and theft cases, however, increased compared to the previous year, with 64 housebreaking incidents and 2,095 shop thefts reported in the first half of 2026. The police urged the public to take responsibility and help in preventing and detecting crime.
