Meet Edward Kang, 17, who trained AI to screen for autism and ADHD

Seventeen-year-old Edward Kang of Hackensack, New Jersey, has developed an innovative approach using artificial intelligence to screen for autism and ADHD by analyzing retinal images. His project, RetinaMind: Novel In Silico and In Vitro Retinal Models of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, earned him a $175,000 science prize, showcasing how young researchers are addressing complex medical challenges.

The retina, connected to the brain, may hold biological indicators of these conditions. Kang trained AI models to detect subtle differences in retinal photos that could aid early diagnosis. He also investigated the biological basis of retinal changes by creating a retinal cell model and validating his findings through a second cell model.

By merging computational analysis with laboratory experiments, Kang bridged the gap between AI detection and potential cellular and genetic mechanisms. Beyond science, Kang is a member of his class council and safety co-chair, a runner-up in the International Research Olympiad, and a baritone in the New Jersey All-State Mixed Chorus, performing at Carnegie Hall.

He also volunteers at a summer camp for homeless children, demonstrating his dedication to community service alongside his academic pursuits. RetinaMind represents an emerging path for neurodevelopmental screening, illustrating how technology and innovative thinking could shape future approaches to understanding autism and ADHD.
