Malaysia tightens Thai border security after southern attacks

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian authorities have intensified border security along the Malaysia-Thailand border following a string of explosions and attacks in southern Thailand, including Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat provinces. As of now, the situation remains under control, according to the Southeast and Northern Brigades of the General Operations Force and the Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (JKDNKA).

Director Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri assured that the country's borders are secure and that the police are bolstering prevention, early detection, and rapid response measures. They are also enhancing intelligence sharing with Thai security agencies. No Malaysian citizens have been affected by the incidents thus far. The Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok and the Malaysian Consulate General in Songkhla are keeping in touch with Thai authorities for updates and ensuring the safety of Malaysians in the affected areas.

Yusri advised Malaysians in, traveling to, or planning to visit southern Thailand to postpone non-essential trips, remain vigilant, follow all security instructions from Thai authorities, and register their information through the e-Konsular portal for consular assistance. Narathiwat was placed under a curfew from last Saturday evening to yesterday morning following over 50 incidents, including bombings, burning of local government offices, and tires.

Explosions in the direction of Narathiwat also caused concern among residents in the Malaysia-Thailand border area, such as Kampung Lubok Gong and Kampung Tersang in Rantau Panjang.
