Maharashtra Marathi Language Drive: 1,183 Auto-Rickshaws And Taxis Inspected In Thane, 89 Drivers Get Notices

Thane, August 24, 2026: The Transport Department in Maharashtra has begun an inspection drive to ensure auto-rickshaw, taxi, Ola-Uber, and tourist vehicle drivers are knowledgeable in the Marathi language. In the city of Thane, 1,183 vehicles underwent inspections over the past three days, resulting in 89 drivers receiving notices for their lack of Marathi proficiency.

The initiative aims to promote communication between drivers and passengers, emphasizing that learning Marathi is not just a rule, but a means of fostering smooth interactions with passengers, including senior citizens, women, and local commuters. The State Transport Department has made it mandatory for drivers operating various types of vehicles in Maharashtra to have knowledge of Marathi.

Marathi learning classes were organized to aid drivers from other states in learning the language. Hemangini Patil, Regional Transport Officer for Thane, emphasized that drivers should see learning Marathi as a way to connect with the social fabric of Maharashtra. Deputy Regional Transport Officer Rohit Katkar confirmed that 1,183 vehicles were inspected and 89 drivers were issued notices.
