Lockerbie bombing trial postponed days before it was due to start

A Libyan man facing trial for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing had his court date pushed back yet again, after new evidence surfaced just weeks before it was set to commence. Jury selection in Washington DC, originally scheduled for Wednesday, has been rescheduled to January of the following year, according to the BBC. The new start date was revealed after newly discovered evidence emerged, previously unknown to both the defense and prosecutors from the US government.

Abu Agila Mohammad Kheir Al-Marimi, the defendant, has consistently denied involvement in building the bomb that caused Pan Am Flight 103 to crash, killing all 270 people on board. His legal team argued that constitutional and ethical obligations compel them to investigate this development, leading to his request for the postponement.

The trial judge, Dabney Friedrich, agreed to the delay, emphasizing the potential significance of the new evidence, and expressed reluctance to allow such a last-minute postponement after months of preparation. This latest setback means a verdict may not be reached until the following spring. The case, a joint Scottish-US investigation since 1988, has seen numerous twists and turns over the past four decades.

Pan Am 103 was en route from London's Heathrow to New York when the bomb detonated, causing the plane to disintegrate at 31,000 feet and claiming all 259 passengers and crew. An additional 11 individuals lost their lives when the wreckage struck buildings in Lockerbie, Scotland. Al-Marimi has been under US custody since 2022, initially set to appear in court in May 2025, a date that was subsequently postponed due to the complexity of the case and his health.

This postponement is the third time the trial has been delayed, following earlier cancellations. The bombing remains the deadliest terror attack in British history.
