Lighting Up Africa: Genesis Energy on Building Africa’s Industrial Future Beyond Capital

The Africa Energy Forum (AEF) in Cape Town, 2026, convened policymakers, investors, developers, financiers and technology leaders to discuss the critical question: how can Africa transition from potential to execution and from resources to lasting value creation? Genesis Energy reinforced its approach to energy development across the continent.

The company hosted a boardroom and participated in high-level sessions, focusing on financing Africa's gas infrastructure deficit and the impact of geopolitics on international attitudes towards gas. A key takeaway was that Africa's infrastructure gap is now seen as its most promising investment opportunity. The narrative is shifting from whether natural gas plays a role to how Africa can maximize local economic benefits from its resources.

Maximizing domestic value with local gas chains is highlighted by Genesis Energy's 84MW gas-fired IPP at Port Harcourt Refinery in Nigeria, replacing expensive diesel and HFO with cleaner, locally processed gas. The discussions underscored that Africa's energy transition requires collaboration between governments, developers, investors, development finance institutions, regulators, and technology providers to structure bankable projects and allocate risk effectively.

While the technology for reliable, clean energy exists, unlocking investment requires innovative financing, coordinated planning, and strategic partnerships.
