Lee appoints special inspector to investigate corruption involving president's family, close aides

President Lee Jae Myung has appointed a former prosecutor, Choi Kil-su, as the special inspector to investigate corruption allegations involving the president's family and close aides, according to a presidential spokesperson. The nomination was made from among three candidates recommended by opposition parties and the bar association.

Choi will serve as the first special inspector in this position in a decade, following the vacancy since 2016. The independent inspector general role was created in 2014 during President Park Geun-hye's term. The National Assembly must recommend three candidates with at least 15 years of legal experience, and it is the president's responsibility to choose one. Choi is described as an expert in investigating corruption cases involving high-ranking officials.
