Korea expands autonomous driving AI tests, deep-tech startup support

The South Korean government announced on Monday plans to significantly broaden pilot projects for locally developed autonomous driving artificial intelligence (AI) and bolster support for deep-tech startups. This initiative aims to expedite the commercialization of emerging technologies. The Ministry of Science and ICT revealed that a government meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Science and ICT Minister Bae Kyung-hoon, approved these measures.

Under the autonomous driving roadmap, the government intends to extend pilot projects, initially initiated in Gwangju, to additional regions and larger-scale operations. This expansion is crucial as it seeks to gather extensive driving data to enhance the efficacy and adaptability of domestically developed autonomous driving AI. The intensifying competition from the United States and China has prompted this strategic move.

Moreover, the government plans to establish a cooperative model that involves transport companies, unions, autonomous driving firms, and platform operators. This collaboration aims to navigate and resolve potential conflicts that may arise as the technology transitions into commercial operations.
